AustriaBirth:January 7, 1956Herbert Willi was a renowned Austrian composer, pianist, and conductor who was born on August 27, 1957, in Bregenz, Austria. He was the son of a music teacher and grew up in a family that was deeply involved in music. His father was a conductor, and his mother was a pianist, which meant that music was an integral part of his upbringing. Willi began his musical education at a young age, studying piano and composition at the Vorarlberg State Conservatory in Feldkirch. He later went on to study at the Vienna University of Music and Performing Arts, where he received his diploma in composition and conducting. During his time in Vienna, he studied under renowned composers such as Friedrich Cerha, Erich Urbanner, and Hans Swarowsky. After completing his studies, Willi began his career as a composer, pianist, and conductor. He quickly gained recognition for his unique style, which blended traditional classical music with modern elements. His compositions were characterized by their intricate harmonies, complex rhythms, and use of unconventional instruments. One of Willi's most notable works is his "Concerto for Piano and Orchestra," which was premiered in 1986 by the Vienna Symphony Orchestra. The concerto is a virtuosic showcase for the soloist, with the piano part featuring rapid runs, arpeggios, and complex chord progressions. The orchestration is equally impressive, with the use of percussion, brass, and woodwinds to create a rich and dynamic sound. Another highlight of Willi's career was his appointment as the conductor of the Vorarlberg Symphony Orchestra in 1991. He held this position for over a decade, during which time he led the orchestra in numerous performances and recordings. He also served as the artistic director of the Bregenz Festival, one of Austria's most prestigious music festivals. Throughout his career, Willi continued to compose music that was both innovative and accessible. He was particularly interested in exploring the intersection between classical music and other genres, such as jazz and rock. His "Concerto for Electric Guitar and Orchestra," which was premiered in 2003, is a prime example of this fusion of styles. In addition to his work as a composer and conductor, Willi was also a respected educator. He taught composition and conducting at the Vorarlberg State Conservatory and the Vienna University of Music and Performing Arts. He was known for his ability to inspire and mentor young musicians, many of whom went on to successful careers in the music industry. Sadly, Herbert Willi passed away on December 28, 2016, at the age of 59. His death was a great loss to the music world, but his legacy lives on through his compositions, recordings, and the countless musicians he inspired and mentored throughout his career.More....
