Henry Krieger is a renowned American composer, best known for his contributions to the world of musical theater. Born on February 9, 1945, in New York City, Krieger grew up in a family of musicians. His father was a jazz pianist, and his mother was a singer. From a young age, Krieger showed a keen interest in music and began playing the piano at the age of six. Krieger attended the High School of Music and Art in New York City, where he studied composition and piano. After graduating, he went on to study at the Manhattan School of Music, where he earned a degree in composition. During his time at the Manhattan School of Music, Krieger was mentored by the renowned composer David Diamond, who had a significant influence on his musical style. Krieger's early works were primarily classical compositions, including chamber music and orchestral pieces. However, he soon turned his attention to musical theater, where he found great success. In 1981, Krieger composed the music for the Broadway musical Dreamgirls, which was a huge hit and earned him a Tony Award nomination for Best Original Score. The show's soundtrack, which featured Krieger's music, went on to win a Grammy Award. Dreamgirls was followed by a string of successful musicals, including The Tap Dance Kid, Side Show, and The Flamingo Kid.
