Evan Stephens was a prominent American composer and musician who made significant contributions to the world of classical music. Born on March 28, 1854, in Pencader, Delaware, Stephens was the son of a Welsh immigrant who was a music teacher and a Baptist minister. From a young age, Stephens showed a keen interest in music and began playing the piano and organ at his father's church. Stephens received his formal education at the Philadelphia Musical Academy, where he studied under renowned composers such as William Mason and Carl Wolfsohn. After completing his studies, Stephens began his career as a music teacher and organist, working at various churches and schools in Pennsylvania and New York. In 1884, Stephens was appointed as the music director of the Mormon Tabernacle Choir in Salt Lake City, Utah. This was a significant turning point in his career, as he went on to serve in this position for over 25 years. Under his leadership, the choir grew in size and reputation, becoming one of the most renowned choral ensembles in the world. Stephens was a prolific composer, and his works spanned a wide range of genres, including hymns, anthems, and operas. One of his most famous compositions is the hymn "Let Us All Press On," which has become a staple in many Christian churches. Other notable works include "The Battle Hymn of the Republic," "The Spirit of God," and "The Handcart Song." Stephens was also a pioneer in the field of music education, and he played a significant role in the development of music programs in schools and universities across the United States. He was a strong advocate for the inclusion of music in the curriculum, believing that it was essential for the development of well-rounded individuals. Throughout his career, Stephens received numerous accolades and honors for his contributions to the world of music. In 1916, he was awarded an honorary doctorate from the University of Utah, and in 1923, he was elected as a fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. Stephens passed away on October 27, 1930, at the age of 76. His legacy lives on through his music, which continues to be performed and enjoyed by audiences around the world.
