Born on August 28, 1958, in New York City, Salerni grew up in a family of musicians. His father was a jazz pianist, and his mother was a classical pianist. Salerni started playing the piano at a young age and showed a natural talent for music. Salerni attended the Juilliard School in New York City, where he studied composition with Vincent Persichetti and Roger Sessions. Salerni's early works were heavily influenced by the serialist and atonal styles of his teachers. However, he soon began to develop his own unique voice, incorporating elements of jazz, rock, and popular music into his compositions. His music is characterized by its rhythmic vitality, harmonic complexity, and melodic lyricism. Salerni has composed works for a wide range of ensembles, including orchestra, chamber ensemble, choir, and solo instruments. Some of his most notable works include "Concerto for Piano and Orchestra," "Concerto for Violin and Orchestra," "Concerto for Clarinet and Orchestra," and "Concerto for Saxophone and Orchestra." He has also composed several operas, including "Tony Caruso's Final Broadcast," "The Man Who Mistook His Wife for a Hat," and "The School for Fools." Salerni's music has been performed by some of the world's leading orchestras and ensembles, including the New York Philharmonic, the Philadelphia Orchestra, the Boston Symphony Orchestra, and the London Symphony Orchestra. He has received numerous awards and honors for his work, including the Rome Prize, the Guggenheim Fellowship, and the American Academy of Arts and Letters Award in Music. In addition to his work as a composer, Salerni is also a dedicated music educator. He has taught at several prestigious institutions, including the University of Pennsylvania, Lehigh University, and the University of Bridgeport. He is currently a professor of music at Lehigh University, where he has been on the faculty since 1984. Salerni's contributions to the world of classical music have been significant and far-reaching.
