The RIAS Chamber Choir is a renowned classical music ensemble based in Berlin, Germany. The choir was founded in 1948 by the Radio in the American Sector (RIAS) of Berlin, which was a radio station established by the Allied forces after World War II. The RIAS Chamber Choir was initially formed as a small vocal ensemble to perform on the radio, but it quickly gained recognition for its exceptional musical talent and became a full-fledged choir. Over the years, the RIAS Chamber Choir has established itself as one of the leading choral ensembles in Europe, known for its impeccable musicianship and innovative programming. The choir has collaborated with some of the most prominent conductors and soloists in the classical music world, and has performed in major concert halls and festivals across the globe. One of the highlights of the RIAS Chamber Choir's early years was its participation in the 1951 Salzburg Festival, where it performed under the baton of the legendary conductor Wilhelm Furtwängler. The choir's performance was widely acclaimed, and it helped to establish the ensemble's reputation as a world-class choral group. In the following years, the RIAS Chamber Choir continued to build on its success, performing a wide range of repertoire from the Renaissance to contemporary music. The choir's commitment to new music was particularly noteworthy, and it premiered many works by leading composers of the time, including Hans Werner Henze, Karlheinz Stockhausen, and György Ligeti. One of the most significant milestones in the RIAS Chamber Choir's history was its collaboration with the conductor Marcus Creed, who served as the choir's artistic director from 1990 to 2003. Under Creed's leadership, the choir achieved new heights of excellence, and its performances were characterized by a remarkable clarity of sound and a deep emotional intensity. During Creed's tenure, the RIAS Chamber Choir also received numerous awards and accolades, including the prestigious Echo Klassik Award for its recording of Bach's St. John Passion. The choir's other notable recordings from this period include works by Brahms, Schumann, and Mendelssohn, as well as contemporary composers such as Arvo Pärt and Sofia Gubaidulina. In addition to its recordings, the RIAS Chamber Choir's live performances during the Creed era were also highly acclaimed. The choir performed at major festivals such as the Salzburg Festival, the Edinburgh International Festival, and the Berliner Festwochen, and collaborated with leading orchestras such as the Berlin Philharmonic and the London Symphony Orchestra. After Marcus Creed's departure, the RIAS Chamber Choir continued to thrive under the leadership of its current artistic director, Justin Doyle. Doyle, who took over in 2018, is a highly respected conductor and choral specialist, and has worked with some of the world's leading ensembles, including the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra and the Academy of Ancient Music. Under Doyle's direction, the RIAS Chamber Choir has continued to explore new repertoire and push the boundaries of choral music. The choir's recent performances have included works by contemporary composers such as Thomas Adès and James MacMillan, as well as lesser-known works from the Renaissance and Baroque periods. Despite the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic, the RIAS Chamber Choir has remained active and innovative, finding new ways to connect with audiences through online performances and recordings.
