The Ware-Patterson Duo is a classical music ensemble that was founded in 2009 by flutist Sarah Jane Young Ware and guitarist Rupert Boyd Patterson. The duo has gained recognition for their unique blend of classical and contemporary music, as well as their virtuosic performances and innovative programming. Sarah Jane Young Ware was born in 1982 in Birmingham, Alabama. She began playing the flute at the age of nine and went on to study at the University of Alabama, where she earned a Bachelor of Music degree in flute performance. She later received a Master of Music degree from the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music and a Doctor of Musical Arts degree from the University of Texas at Austin. Ware has performed with numerous orchestras and ensembles, including the Austin Symphony Orchestra, the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra, and the Cincinnati Opera. Rupert Boyd Patterson was born in 1980 in Canberra, Australia. He began playing the guitar at the age of eight and went on to study at the Australian National University School of Music. He later received a Master of Music degree from the Manhattan School of Music and a Doctor of Musical Arts degree from the University of Arizona. Patterson has won numerous awards and competitions, including the Andrés Segovia International Guitar Competition and the Lillian Fuchs Chamber Music Competition. The Ware-Patterson Duo was formed in 2009 when Ware and Patterson met while studying at the University of Texas at Austin. The duo quickly gained recognition for their innovative programming, which combines classical works with contemporary pieces and arrangements. They have performed at numerous venues and festivals throughout the United States, including the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C., the Guitar Foundation of America Convention, and the Texas Music Festival. One of the highlights of the Ware-Patterson Duo's career was their performance at the 2012 National Flute Association Convention in Las Vegas, Nevada. The duo performed a program of works by Bach, Piazzolla, and Assad, as well as their own arrangements of popular songs by the Beatles and Radiohead. The performance was well-received by both the audience and critics, with one reviewer describing the duo's playing as "virtuosic and expressive." In addition to their performances, the Ware-Patterson Duo has also released several recordings. Their debut album, "Bach to Beaser," was released in 2012 and features works by Bach, Piazzolla, and contemporary composer Robert Beaser. Their second album, "Song to the Sun," was released in 2015 and features works by Spanish and Latin American composers, as well as their own arrangements of popular songs by the Beatles and Led Zeppelin. In 2013, they were awarded the Austin Critics' Table Award for Best Chamber Music Performance for their performance of works by Bach and Piazzolla.
