William Ortiz-Alvarado was a Puerto Rican composer and pianist who was born on December 28, 1949, in San Juan, Puerto Rico. He was the son of a music teacher and grew up in a musical family. His father, Rafael Ortiz, was a pianist and composer, and his mother, Carmen Alvarado, was a singer. From a young age, Ortiz-Alvarado showed a natural talent for music and began studying piano at the age of six. Ortiz-Alvarado's early musical education was primarily focused on classical music. He studied piano with renowned Puerto Rican pianist and composer, Jesús María Sanromá, and later with American pianist, John Browning. He also studied composition with composer and conductor, Carlos Surinach, and later with American composer, George Crumb. In 1972, Ortiz-Alvarado received a Bachelor of Music degree from the University of Puerto Rico, where he studied piano and composition. He then went on to earn a Master of Music degree from the Juilliard School in New York City, where he studied piano with John Browning and composition with George Crumb. Ortiz-Alvarado's compositions are characterized by their use of traditional forms and techniques, combined with modern harmonies and rhythms. His music often incorporates elements of Puerto Rican folk music and culture, as well as influences from other Latin American and European musical traditions. One of Ortiz-Alvarado's most notable works is his Piano Concerto No. 1, which was premiered in 1980 by the Puerto Rico Symphony Orchestra, with the composer as soloist. The concerto is a virtuosic showcase for the piano, with intricate and challenging passages that demonstrate Ortiz-Alvarado's technical prowess as a pianist. The work also features lush orchestration and a strong sense of rhythmic drive, with elements of Puerto Rican folk music woven throughout. Another significant work by Ortiz-Alvarado is his String Quartet No. 1, which was premiered in 1983 by the Cuarteto Latinoamericano. The quartet is a complex and challenging work, with intricate counterpoint and shifting harmonies that create a sense of tension and release. The work also incorporates elements of Puerto Rican folk music, with rhythmic patterns and melodic motifs that evoke the sounds of the island. Ortiz-Alvarado's music has been performed by numerous orchestras and ensembles around the world, including the New York Philharmonic, the Boston Symphony Orchestra, and the London Symphony Orchestra. He has also been the recipient of numerous awards and honors, including the Guggenheim Fellowship, the National Endowment for the Arts Fellowship, and the ASCAP Deems Taylor Award. In addition to his work as a composer, Ortiz-Alvarado was also a respected pianist and educator. He taught at the University of Puerto Rico and the Conservatory of Music of Puerto Rico, and was a visiting professor at numerous universities and conservatories around the world. He also performed extensively as a soloist and chamber musician, and was known for his passionate and expressive playing style. Sadly, Ortiz-Alvarado passed away on December 17, 2010, at the age of 60. However, his legacy as a composer and musician continues to live on through his music, which remains an important part of the classical music repertoire. His contributions to the world of music have helped to bridge the gap between traditional and modern musical styles, and have helped to bring the sounds of Puerto Rico and Latin America to a wider audience.
