He grew up in a family of musicians, with his father being a violinist and his mother a pianist. Kurtz began playing the piano at a young age and showed a natural talent for music. He went on to study at the Juilliard School of Music, where he received a Bachelor of Music degree in composition. After completing his studies, Kurtz began his career as a composer, writing music for various ensembles and orchestras. He quickly gained recognition for his unique style, which blended elements of classical music with jazz and other genres. His early works, such as the Piano Sonata No. 1 and the String Quartet No. 1, showcased his talent for creating complex and intricate compositions. In the 1950s, Kurtz began to gain wider recognition for his work. He was commissioned to write music for the New York Philharmonic, and his compositions were performed by other major orchestras around the world. One of his most famous works from this period was the Symphony No. 1, which was premiered by the New York Philharmonic in 1954. Throughout the 1960s and 1970s, Kurtz continued to write music that pushed the boundaries of classical music.
