Dunedin Players is a classical music ensemble that was founded in 1995 in Edinburgh, Scotland. The group is known for its performances of Baroque and Renaissance music, as well as its collaborations with other musicians and ensembles. The founding members of Dunedin Players were John Butt, Nicholas Mulroy, and Susan Hamilton. Butt, who serves as the group's artistic director and conductor, is a renowned musicologist and keyboardist who has performed with many of the world's leading orchestras and ensembles. Mulroy and Hamilton are both accomplished vocalists who have performed with a variety of opera companies and choral groups. From the beginning, Dunedin Players set out to explore the rich repertoire of Baroque and Renaissance music, with a particular focus on the works of J.S. Bach. The group's first major performance was a concert of Bach's cantatas, which was met with critical acclaim and established the ensemble as a force to be reckoned with in the world of early music. Over the years, Dunedin Players has expanded its repertoire to include works by other composers of the Baroque and Renaissance eras, such as Handel, Vivaldi, and Monteverdi. The group has also collaborated with a number of other musicians and ensembles, including the Scottish Chamber Orchestra, the Academy of Ancient Music, and the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment. One of the highlights of Dunedin Players' career was their performance of Bach's St. Matthew Passion at the Edinburgh International Festival in 2003. The performance, which featured a cast of over 50 musicians and vocalists, was hailed as a triumph and cemented the group's reputation as one of the foremost interpreters of Bach's music. In addition to their performances, Dunedin Players has also received numerous awards and accolades for their recordings. The group's recording of Bach's Mass in B Minor won the Gramophone Award for Best Baroque Vocal Recording in 2007, and their recording of Handel's Messiah was nominated for a Grammy Award in 2013. Despite their many achievements, Dunedin Players remains committed to exploring new avenues in early music and pushing the boundaries of what is possible in the genre. With their impeccable musicianship and unwavering dedication to their craft, the group is sure to continue making waves in the world of classical music for years to come.
