Alex Mincek is a contemporary classical music composer who was born in 1975 in New York City. He grew up in a family of musicians, with his father being a jazz saxophonist and his mother a classical pianist. Mincek began playing the saxophone at a young age and later studied composition at the Manhattan School of Music and Columbia University. Mincek's music is known for its complexity and use of extended techniques, such as multiphonics and microtones. He is also interested in exploring the relationship between sound and space, often incorporating spatialization techniques into his compositions. One of Mincek's early works, "Pendulum VII," was written for solo saxophone and premiered in 2000. The piece features intricate rhythms and extended techniques, showcasing Mincek's interest in exploring the sonic possibilities of the saxophone. Another notable work from this period is "Harmonielehre," a piece for chamber ensemble that was inspired by Arnold Schoenberg's treatise of the same name. Mincek's breakthrough work came in 2009 with the premiere of his piece "Pendulum N°2: Tableaux Vivants," which was commissioned by the Los Angeles Philharmonic. The piece is scored for large orchestra and features a complex rhythmic structure that is reminiscent of the swinging motion of a pendulum. "Pendulum N°2" received critical acclaim and established Mincek as one of the leading voices in contemporary classical music. In 2011, Mincek released his first album, "Harmonielehre," which features several of his chamber works performed by the Wet Ink Ensemble. The album received positive reviews and helped to further establish Mincek's reputation as a composer. Mincek's most recent work, "Images of Duration," was commissioned by the New York Philharmonic and premiered in 2018. The piece is scored for large orchestra and features a complex, layered texture that is meant to evoke the experience of time passing. "Images of Duration" received critical acclaim and cemented Mincek's status as one of the most innovative and exciting composers working today.
