Matthew Santa was born on May 12, 1978, in New York City. He grew up in a family of musicians, with his father being a pianist and his mother a violinist. From a young age, Santa showed a natural talent for music and began playing the piano at the age of four. He was also exposed to classical music at an early age, attending concerts and performances with his parents. Santa's parents recognized his talent and encouraged him to pursue music seriously. He began taking piano lessons with a private tutor and quickly progressed. By the age of ten, he was already composing his own music and performing in public. He continued to study music throughout his childhood and teenage years, attending music camps and participating in competitions. In 1996, Santa was accepted into the Juilliard School in New York City, one of the most prestigious music schools in the world. He studied composition under the guidance of renowned composers such as John Corigliano and Christopher Rouse. During his time at Juilliard, Santa composed several works that received critical acclaim, including his Symphony No. 1, which was performed by the Juilliard Orchestra. After graduating from Juilliard in 2000, Santa began his career as a composer. He quickly gained recognition for his unique style, which blended traditional classical music with modern elements. His works were characterized by their complex harmonies, intricate rhythms, and use of electronic instruments. One of Santa's most notable works is his Piano Concerto No. 1, which was premiered in 2003 by the New York Philharmonic. The concerto features a solo piano accompanied by a full orchestra and incorporates elements of jazz and rock music. The piece received widespread critical acclaim and established Santa as one of the most promising young composers of his generation. In 2005, Santa was commissioned by the Metropolitan Opera to compose an opera based on the life of Leonardo da Vinci. The opera, titled Leonardo, premiered in 2007 and was praised for its innovative use of multimedia elements, including projections and video. The opera was also notable for its complex score, which incorporated elements of Renaissance music and modern electronic music. Santa continued to compose throughout the 2010s, producing several works that received critical acclaim. In 2012, he composed a ballet score for the New York City Ballet, which was performed at Lincoln Center. The ballet, titled The Four Seasons, was a modern interpretation of Vivaldi's famous work and featured a blend of classical and electronic music. In 2016, Santa was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for Music for his Symphony No. 2. The symphony, which was commissioned by the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, was praised for its innovative use of orchestration and its exploration of themes related to social justice and inequality. Throughout his career, Santa has been recognized for his contributions to classical music. He has received numerous awards and honors, including the Guggenheim Fellowship and the MacArthur Fellowship. He has also served as a guest conductor for several major orchestras, including the New York Philharmonic and the Boston Symphony Orchestra. Today, Santa continues to compose and perform music.
