József Sári was a Hungarian composer who was born on January 17, 1935, in Budapest, Hungary. He was the son of a music teacher and grew up in a musical family. His father, József Sári Sr., was a violinist and conductor, and his mother, Erzsébet Sári, was a pianist. From a young age, Sári showed a great interest in music and began studying the piano and composition. Sári attended the Franz Liszt Academy of Music in Budapest, where he studied composition with Ferenc Farkas and Zoltán Kodály. He graduated in 1959 and began his career as a composer. His early works were influenced by the Hungarian folk music tradition and the works of Bartók and Kodály. In 1962, Sári won the Erkel Prize for his composition "Concerto for Orchestra." This was a significant achievement for the young composer and helped to establish his reputation in Hungary. Over the next few years, Sári continued to compose and won several other awards, including the Kossuth Prize in 1973. Sári's music is characterized by its use of folk melodies and rhythms, as well as its modernist harmonies and structures. He was particularly interested in the music of the Roma people and incorporated their music into his compositions. His works often feature virtuosic solo passages and complex polyrhythms. One of Sári's most famous works is his "Concerto for Violin and Orchestra," which was composed in 1971. The concerto is a virtuosic showcase for the solo violinist and features complex rhythms and harmonies. It has been performed by many of the world's leading violinists, including Itzhak Perlman and Joshua Bell. Another notable work by Sári is his "Concerto for Cimbalom and Orchestra," which was composed in 1980. The cimbalom is a traditional Hungarian instrument that is similar to a hammered dulcimer. Sári's concerto is a fusion of traditional Hungarian music and modernist techniques, and it has become a staple of the cimbalom repertoire. Sári also composed several operas, including "The Tragedy of Man," which is based on a play by Imre Madách. The opera premiered in 1985 and has since become one of the most popular operas in Hungary. Sári's other operas include "The Red and the Black" and "The Last Temptation." In addition to his compositions, Sári was also a respected music educator. He taught composition at the Franz Liszt Academy of Music and was a mentor to many young composers. He was also a member of the Hungarian Academy of Arts and Sciences and served as the president of the Hungarian Composers' Union. Sári continued to compose and perform until his death on August 20, 2019, at the age of 84. He left behind a legacy of innovative and influential compositions that continue to be performed and admired by musicians and audiences around the world.
