He was the youngest of three children and grew up in a family that was passionate about music. His father was a violinist, and his mother was a pianist, so it was no surprise that Walter showed an interest in music from a young age. Walter began his musical education at the age of six when he started taking piano lessons. He quickly showed a natural talent for the instrument and progressed rapidly. By the time he was a teenager, he was already performing in public, and his talent was recognized by many. In 1950, Walter enrolled at the Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia in Rome, where he studied piano under the guidance of Carlo Zecchi. He graduated with honors in 1954 and went on to pursue a career as a concert pianist. Walter's career took off in the 1960s when he began performing in major concert halls around the world. He was known for his technical brilliance and his ability to bring out the emotional depth of the music he played. He was particularly renowned for his interpretations of the works of Beethoven, Chopin, and Liszt. One of the highlights of Walter's career was his performance at the Royal Albert Hall in London in 1967. He played Beethoven's Piano Concerto No. 5, and the audience was so moved by his performance that they gave him a standing ovation that lasted for several minutes. Walter also performed at many other prestigious venues, including Carnegie Hall in New York, the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam, and the Salle Pleyel in Paris. He was a regular performer at the Salzburg Festival and the Edinburgh Festival, and he also toured extensively in Asia and South America. In addition to his concert performances, Walter also made many recordings throughout his career. He recorded the complete piano works of Chopin, as well as the complete piano sonatas of Beethoven. His recordings were highly acclaimed, and he won several awards for his work. Walter was also a respected teacher, and he taught at the Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia for many years. He was known for his dedication to his students and his ability to inspire them to reach their full potential. Throughout his career, Walter received many awards and honors for his contributions to classical music. In 1972, he was awarded the Order of Merit of the Italian Republic, and in 1982, he was made a Knight of the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany. He was also awarded the Grand Prix du Disque for his recording of the complete piano works of Chopin. Walter continued to perform and teach until his death on January 1, 2005, at the age of 72.
