Charles Manning's Granada Walthamstow Orchestra was a classical music ensemble that was founded in 1946 by Charles Manning, a British conductor and composer. The orchestra was based in Walthamstow, a district in the London Borough of Waltham Forest, and was sponsored by Granada Television, a British commercial television company. The orchestra's main members were professional musicians who were recruited from various orchestras in London, including the London Symphony Orchestra and the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra. The orchestra's first concert was held on November 14, 1946, at the Granada Cinema in Walthamstow, and was attended by over 2,000 people. Over the years, the orchestra performed a wide range of classical music, including works by Beethoven, Mozart, Brahms, and Tchaikovsky. The orchestra also performed contemporary music by British composers, such as Benjamin Britten and William Walton. One of the highlights of the orchestra's performances was its annual Christmas concert, which was broadcast live on Granada Television. The concert featured traditional Christmas carols and music, as well as performances by guest soloists and choirs. The orchestra also performed at various music festivals and competitions, including the Edinburgh Festival and the BBC Proms. In 1951, the orchestra won the first prize at the International Festival of Youth Orchestras in Aberdeen, Scotland. In addition to its performances, the orchestra also had a strong educational program, which included workshops and concerts for schoolchildren. The orchestra also provided opportunities for young musicians to perform with the orchestra, and many of its former members went on to have successful careers in music. The orchestra disbanded in 1962, due to financial difficulties and changes in the music industry. However, its legacy lives on, and it is remembered as one of the most successful and innovative classical music ensembles of its time.
