Heinrich Schulz-Beuthen was a German composer and conductor who lived from 1838 to 1915. He was born in the town of Beuthen in Upper Silesia, which is now part of Poland. His father was a musician and his mother was a singer, so he grew up in a musical household and began studying music at a young age. Schulz-Beuthen studied composition with Franz Liszt in Weimar and later with Friedrich Kiel in Berlin. He also studied conducting with Hans von Bülow, who was a close friend of Liszt. Schulz-Beuthen was a talented musician and quickly gained a reputation as a composer and conductor. In 1865, Schulz-Beuthen was appointed conductor of the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra, which was one of the most prestigious orchestras in Europe at the time. He held this position for several years and was highly regarded for his skill as a conductor. As a composer, Schulz-Beuthen was known for his works for orchestra, chamber music, and piano. He was particularly interested in the music of the Romantic era and was influenced by composers such as Liszt, Wagner, and Brahms. One of Schulz-Beuthen's most famous works is his Symphony No. 2 in D minor, which was composed in 1877. This symphony is a large-scale work that features a wide range of emotions and musical styles. It is considered one of the most important symphonies of the late Romantic era and is still performed today. Schulz-Beuthen also composed several operas, including Der Corregidor, which premiered in 1896. This opera is based on a Spanish play and tells the story of a corrupt magistrate who is eventually brought to justice. The opera was well-received and helped to establish Schulz-Beuthen as a major composer of his time. In addition to his work as a composer and conductor, Schulz-Beuthen was also a respected music critic. He wrote for several newspapers and magazines and was known for his insightful and thoughtful reviews of new music. Schulz-Beuthen continued to compose and conduct throughout his life, and his music remained popular even after his death in 1915. Today, he is remembered as one of the most important composers of the late Romantic era and his music continues to be performed and enjoyed by audiences around the world.
