Role:ComposerPeriod:RomanticGenre:VocalGaetano Errico Pennino was an Italian-American composer and conductor who made significant contributions to the world of classical music. He was born on January 9, 1890, in Naples, Italy, to a family of musicians. His father, Giuseppe Pennino, was a composer and conductor, and his mother, Maria Errico, was a singer. From a young age, Pennino showed a keen interest in music and began studying piano and composition under his father's guidance. In 1906, Pennino moved to the United States with his family and settled in New York City. He continued his musical education at the New York College of Music, where he studied composition with Frank Damrosch and conducting with Walter Damrosch. He also studied piano with Rafael Joseffy and theory with Percy Goetschius. During this time, Pennino began to establish himself as a composer, and his works were performed by various orchestras and ensembles in New York City. In 1913, Pennino was appointed the conductor of the New York Symphony Orchestra, a position he held for several years. He also served as the conductor of the New York Philharmonic Society and the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra. During this time, Pennino continued to compose, and his works were performed by some of the most prominent orchestras and ensembles in the United States. One of Pennino's most significant works is his opera, "The Song of the Lark," which premiered in 1925 at the Metropolitan Opera House in New York City. The opera is based on the novel of the same name by Willa Cather and tells the story of a young girl's journey to become a successful artist. The opera was well-received by audiences and critics alike and established Pennino as a leading composer of his time. Pennino's other notable works include his Symphony No. 1, which premiered in 1919 and was performed by the New York Symphony Orchestra, and his Piano Concerto, which premiered in 1922 and was performed by the New York Philharmonic Society. He also composed several chamber works, including his String Quartet No. 1, which premiered in 1920 and was performed by the Flonzaley Quartet. In addition to his work as a composer and conductor, Pennino was also a respected music educator. He taught at the New York College of Music and the Juilliard School of Music, where he was a professor of composition and conducting. Many of his students went on to have successful careers in music, including Leonard Bernstein, who studied with Pennino at the Juilliard School. Pennino continued to compose and conduct throughout his life, and his works were performed by orchestras and ensembles around the world. He died on December 27, 1945, in New York City, leaving behind a legacy of music that continues to inspire and captivate audiences today.More....
