Irving Aaronson was an American composer, pianist, and bandleader who was born on February 7, 1895, in New York City. He was the son of Russian Jewish immigrants and grew up in a musical family. His father was a violinist, and his mother was a pianist. Irving began playing the piano at a young age and showed a natural talent for music. As a teenager, Irving Aaronson began playing in local dance bands in New York City. He quickly gained a reputation as a skilled pianist and arranger. In 1919, he formed his own band, the Crusaders, which became popular in the New York City area. The band played a mix of jazz, blues, and popular music, and Aaronson's arrangements were known for their innovative use of syncopation and improvisation. In 1922, Irving Aaronson and the Crusaders were hired to play at the Hotel Pennsylvania in New York City. The band's performances were broadcast live on the radio, which helped to increase their popularity. They soon became one of the most popular dance bands in the country, and their recordings sold millions of copies. One of Irving Aaronson's most famous compositions was "Let's Misbehave," which he wrote in 1927. The song was recorded by many popular singers of the time, including Irving Berlin and Cole Porter. It became a hit and is still considered a classic of the jazz and pop genres. In addition to his work as a composer and bandleader, Irving Aaronson was also a talented pianist. He often performed solo piano pieces during his band's performances, and his virtuosic playing was admired by audiences and fellow musicians alike. Despite his success, Irving Aaronson's career was cut short by the Great Depression. The economic downturn led to a decline in the popularity of dance bands, and many musicians struggled to find work. In 1932, Aaronson disbanded the Crusaders and retired from music. Irving Aaronson died on April 10, 1963, at the age of 68. He is remembered as a talented composer and bandleader who helped to shape the sound of jazz and popular music in the early 20th century. His innovative arrangements and virtuosic piano playing continue to inspire musicians today.
