Born on August 25, 1959, in Binghamton, New York, Breault grew up in a musical family. His father was a church organist, and his mother was a choir director. Breault's love for music began at a young age, and he started singing in his church choir when he was just six years old. Breault's talent for singing was evident from an early age, and he began taking voice lessons when he was a teenager. He went on to study music at the Crane School of Music at SUNY Potsdam, where he earned a Bachelor of Music degree in Vocal Performance. He then went on to earn a Master of Music degree in Vocal Performance from the University of Michigan. Breault's career as a professional singer began in the early 1980s when he joined the New York City Opera as an apprentice. He quickly rose through the ranks and became a principal tenor with the company. He made his debut with the company in 1985, singing the role of the Duke in Verdi's Rigoletto. He went on to perform in many other productions with the company, including La Bohème, Carmen, and The Barber of Seville. Breault's talent as a singer was recognized by many, and he began receiving invitations to perform with other opera companies around the world. He made his European debut in 1989, singing the role of Don Ottavio in Mozart's Don Giovanni at the Glyndebourne Festival Opera in England. He also performed with the Royal Opera House in London, the Paris Opera, and the Vienna State Opera. Breault's career continued to flourish throughout the 1990s and 2000s. He performed with many of the world's leading opera companies, including the Metropolitan Opera, the San Francisco Opera, and the Lyric Opera of Chicago. He also performed in many concerts and recitals, both in the United States and abroad. Breault's repertoire is extensive, and he has performed in many operas and oratorios. Some of his most notable roles include Rodolfo in La Bohème, Alfredo in La Traviata, and the title role in Faust. He has also performed in many oratorios, including Handel's Messiah, Bach's St. Matthew Passion, and Mozart's Requiem. Breault's talent as a singer has been recognized by many, and he has received numerous awards and honors throughout his career. In 1991, he was awarded the Richard Tucker Award, which is given annually to an American singer who is on the verge of a major international career. He was also a winner of the Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions in 1985. Breault has also been recognized for his work as a teacher and mentor. He has taught at many universities and conservatories, including the University of Michigan, the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music, and the Manhattan School of Music.
