The Amsterdam Guitar Trio is a classical music ensemble that has been captivating audiences with their unique sound and virtuosic performances for over three decades. The trio consists of three guitarists: Helenus de Rijke, Johan Dorrestein, and Olga Franssen. They have performed all over the world, from Europe to Asia to the Americas, and have won numerous awards for their exceptional musicianship. The Amsterdam Guitar Trio was formed in 1985, when Helenus de Rijke and Johan Dorrestein met at the Sweelinck Conservatory in Amsterdam. They quickly discovered a shared passion for classical guitar music and began performing together as a duo. In 1987, they were joined by Olga Franssen, and the Amsterdam Guitar Trio was born. From the beginning, the trio set out to explore the full range of possibilities offered by the classical guitar. They were inspired by the rich tradition of guitar music from Spain and Latin America, but also sought to incorporate elements of jazz, rock, and contemporary classical music into their repertoire. Their innovative approach to the guitar has earned them a reputation as one of the most exciting and dynamic ensembles in the classical music world. The Amsterdam Guitar Trio's first major performance came in 1988, when they won the prestigious Vriendenkrans Competition at the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam. This was a significant achievement for the young ensemble, and it helped to launch their career on the international stage. They went on to perform at some of the world's most renowned concert halls, including Carnegie Hall in New York, the Royal Albert Hall in London, and the Berlin Philharmonic. Over the years, the Amsterdam Guitar Trio has collaborated with many other musicians and ensembles, including the Netherlands Chamber Orchestra, the Amsterdam Sinfonietta, and the Dutch National Ballet. They have also recorded several albums, including "Latin American Guitar Music," "Spanish Guitar Music," and "Guitar Music from the Netherlands." One of the highlights of the Amsterdam Guitar Trio's career came in 1996, when they were invited to perform at the Olympic Games in Atlanta, Georgia. They played a program of music that included works by Bach, Vivaldi, and Piazzolla, and their performance was broadcast to millions of viewers around the world. This was a tremendous honor for the trio, and it helped to raise their profile even further. In addition to their performances, the Amsterdam Guitar Trio has also been recognized for their contributions to the world of classical music. They have won several awards, including the Dutch Edison Award for their album "Spanish Guitar Music," and the Silver Medal at the Concours International de Guitare in Paris. They have also been appointed as official ambassadors for the Dutch guitar industry, and have worked to promote the instrument and its music around the world. Despite their many achievements, the Amsterdam Guitar Trio remains committed to exploring new avenues of expression and pushing the boundaries of classical guitar music. They continue to perform and record, and their music continues to inspire and delight audiences around the world.
