The Winds of Bamberg Symphony Orchestra is a classical music ensemble based in Bamberg, Germany. The orchestra was founded in 1946 by members of the former German Philharmonic Orchestra, which had been disbanded after World War II. The new ensemble was initially called the Bamberg Symphony Orchestra, but in 1959 it was renamed the Winds of Bamberg Symphony Orchestra to reflect its focus on wind instruments. The orchestra's early years were marked by financial struggles and a lack of recognition. However, under the leadership of conductor Joseph Keilberth, the Winds of Bamberg Symphony Orchestra began to gain a reputation for excellence. Keilberth served as the orchestra's principal conductor from 1949 until his death in 1968, and during his tenure he led the ensemble on numerous international tours and recordings. One of the orchestra's most notable performances during this period was its 1953 debut at the Salzburg Festival, where it performed Mozart's "Jupiter" Symphony. The performance was a critical success and helped to establish the Winds of Bamberg Symphony Orchestra as a major player in the classical music world. After Keilberth's death, the orchestra went through a period of transition as it searched for a new principal conductor. In 1978, the position was filled by Horst Stein, who had previously served as the principal conductor of the Frankfurt Opera. Stein's tenure with the orchestra was marked by a focus on the works of German composers such as Beethoven, Brahms, and Wagner. Under Stein's leadership, the Winds of Bamberg Symphony Orchestra continued to tour extensively and record prolifically. In 1982, the orchestra made its first tour of the United States, performing in cities such as New York, Boston, and Chicago. The tour was a critical and commercial success, and helped to further raise the orchestra's profile. In 1996, the orchestra appointed its current principal conductor, Jonathan Nott. Nott, who had previously served as the principal conductor of the Lucerne Symphony Orchestra, brought a new energy and vision to the ensemble. Under his leadership, the Winds of Bamberg Symphony Orchestra has continued to explore a wide range of repertoire, from classical works to contemporary compositions. One of the highlights of Nott's tenure with the orchestra was its 2007 performance of Mahler's Symphony No. 7 at the BBC Proms in London. The performance was widely praised by critics, with The Guardian calling it "a triumph of virtuosity and musical intelligence." The orchestra has also continued to tour extensively under Nott's leadership, with recent tours taking them to Asia, South America, and the United States. In addition to its performances, the Winds of Bamberg Symphony Orchestra has also received numerous awards and accolades over the years. In 2007, the orchestra was awarded the Echo Klassik award for its recording of Mahler's Symphony No. 7. The orchestra has also been recognized for its commitment to new music, with the 2010 premiere of Wolfgang Rihm's "Dionysus" being a particular highlight. Today, the Winds of Bamberg Symphony Orchestra remains one of the most respected and acclaimed classical music ensembles in the world. With a rich history and a commitment to excellence, the orchestra continues to inspire audiences and musicians alike.
