The Ljubljana Chamber Orchestra is a renowned classical music ensemble based in Ljubljana, Slovenia. The orchestra was founded in 1957 by the Slovenian conductor Anton Nanut, who served as its artistic director until his death in 2017. Over the years, the Ljubljana Chamber Orchestra has established itself as one of the leading chamber orchestras in Europe, known for its virtuosity, precision, and musical sensitivity. The Ljubljana Chamber Orchestra was born out of a desire to create a high-quality chamber orchestra in Slovenia that could perform a wide range of repertoire, from Baroque to contemporary music. Anton Nanut, who was then a young conductor and violinist, gathered a group of talented musicians from the Ljubljana Conservatory and other music schools in Slovenia, and together they formed the Ljubljana Chamber Orchestra. The orchestra's first concert took place on December 12, 1957, at the Slovenian Philharmonic Hall in Ljubljana, and it was an immediate success. From its early days, the Ljubljana Chamber Orchestra was committed to promoting Slovenian music and composers. The orchestra premiered many works by Slovenian composers, including Alojz Srebotnjak, Marjan Kozina, and Uroš Krek, and it also collaborated with many Slovenian soloists, such as the pianist Dubravka Tomšič and the violinist Igor Ozim. In addition to its commitment to Slovenian music, the Ljubljana Chamber Orchestra also established itself as a versatile ensemble that could perform a wide range of repertoire with equal skill and sensitivity. The orchestra's repertoire includes works by Bach, Mozart, Beethoven, Schubert, Brahms, Tchaikovsky, and many other composers, as well as contemporary music by composers such as Arvo Pärt, Philip Glass, and John Adams. Over the years, the Ljubljana Chamber Orchestra has performed in many of the world's leading concert halls and festivals, including the Berlin Philharmonic Hall, the Musikverein in Vienna, the Royal Festival Hall in London, the Salle Pleyel in Paris, and the Carnegie Hall in New York. The orchestra has also toured extensively throughout Europe, Asia, and the Americas, and it has collaborated with many of the world's leading soloists, including Yehudi Menuhin, Mstislav Rostropovich, Martha Argerich, and Anne-Sophie Mutter. One of the highlights of the Ljubljana Chamber Orchestra's career was its performance at the 1987 Salzburg Festival, where it performed Mozart's Piano Concerto No. 23 with the pianist Dubravka Tomšič. The performance was widely acclaimed, and it helped to establish the orchestra's reputation as one of the leading chamber orchestras in Europe. The Ljubljana Chamber Orchestra has also received many awards and honors over the years. In 1988, the orchestra was awarded the Prešeren Award, Slovenia's highest cultural award, for its contributions to Slovenian music. In 1997, the orchestra was awarded the Golden Order of Merit of the Republic of Slovenia, and in 2007, it was awarded the Order of Merit of the Italian Republic. Despite the many accolades and honors it has received, the Ljubljana Chamber Orchestra remains committed to its mission of promoting Slovenian music and culture, and to providing audiences with high-quality performances of a wide range of repertoire. The orchestra continues to perform regularly in Slovenia and abroad, and it remains one of the most respected and beloved classical music ensembles in Europe.
