Bowman was an American composer and pianist who was born on November 9, 1887, in Fort Worth, Texas. He was the son of a Baptist minister and grew up in a musical family. His mother was a pianist, and his father played the guitar and sang in the church choir. Bowman began playing the piano at a young age and showed a natural talent for music. Bowman's family moved to Kansas City, Missouri, when he was a teenager, and he began playing in local clubs and theaters. He also worked as a pianist for silent films, accompanying the action on the screen with his music. Bowman's early experiences in Kansas City would later influence his compositions, as he incorporated elements of ragtime and jazz into his music. In 1914, Bowman wrote his most famous composition, "Twelfth Street Rag." The piece was named after the street in Kansas City where Bowman had played in clubs and theaters. "Twelfth Street Rag" became a hit and was recorded by numerous artists, including Louis Armstrong and Benny Goodman. The piece has since become a classic of the ragtime genre and is still played and recorded today. Bowman continued to compose and perform throughout his life, but he never achieved the same level of success as he did with "Twelfth Street Rag." He wrote several other ragtime pieces, including "Kansas City Blues" and "St. Louis Blues," but these were not as popular as his signature piece. In addition to his work as a composer, Bowman was also a respected pianist. He played in clubs and theaters throughout the United States and Europe, and he was known for his virtuosic playing style. Bowman was also a teacher, and he taught piano to many students over the course of his career. Bowman died on March 26, 1949, in Kansas City, Missouri, at the age of 61. He left behind a legacy as one of the most important composers of the ragtime era. His music continues to be played and enjoyed by musicians and audiences around the world.More....
