Alina Orraca was born on December 12, 1985, in Havana, Cuba. She grew up in a family of musicians, with her mother being a pianist and her father a percussionist. From a young age, Orraca showed a natural talent for music and began studying the piano at the age of six. Orraca's musical education began at the Manuel Saumell Conservatory in Havana, where she studied piano and music theory. She later attended the Amadeo Roldán Conservatory, where she continued her studies in piano and also began studying composition. In 2003, Orraca was accepted into the National School of Arts in Havana, where she studied composition under the guidance of renowned Cuban composer Leo Brouwer. During her time at the National School of Arts, Orraca also began to develop her skills as a conductor, studying under the tutelage of conductor Enrique Pérez Mesa. After completing her studies at the National School of Arts, Orraca went on to study at the Higher Institute of Art in Havana, where she continued her studies in composition and conducting. During this time, she also began to gain recognition as a performer, winning several awards in national piano competitions. In 2008, Orraca was awarded a scholarship to study at the Royal Conservatory of Brussels in Belgium, where she continued her studies in composition and conducting. While in Brussels, she also had the opportunity to work with renowned conductors such as Sir Simon Rattle and Daniel Barenboim. After completing her studies in Brussels, Orraca returned to Cuba, where she began to establish herself as a prominent figure in the Cuban classical music scene. She founded the Alina Orraca Chamber Orchestra, which quickly gained a reputation for its innovative programming and high-quality performances. In 2012, Orraca was invited to conduct the National Symphony Orchestra of Cuba in a performance of Beethoven's Symphony No. 9. The performance was a huge success, and Orraca was praised for her skillful interpretation of the piece. Since then, Orraca has gone on to conduct several other major orchestras, including the Havana Lyceum Orchestra and the National Philharmonic Orchestra of Cuba. She has also been invited to conduct orchestras in other countries, including the National Symphony Orchestra of Ecuador and the Symphony Orchestra of the University of Guanajuato in Mexico. In addition to her work as a conductor, Orraca is also an accomplished composer. Her compositions have been performed by several orchestras, including the National Symphony Orchestra of Cuba and the Brussels Philharmonic. Orraca has received several awards and honors throughout her career. In 2013, she was awarded the National Prize for Culture in the category of Music, the highest honor that can be bestowed upon a Cuban artist. She has also been awarded the Alejo Carpentier Medal, the highest honor that can be awarded to a Cuban artist by the Cuban government. In addition to her work as a musician, Orraca is also a dedicated educator. She has taught at several music schools and conservatories in Cuba, and has also given masterclasses and workshops in other countries.
