Role:ComposerBirth:1661 in BinderslebenDeath:1731 in Erfurt, GermanyPeriod:BaroqueContemporaryJohann Heinrich Buttstedt was a German composer and organist who lived during the Baroque period. He was born on April 25, 1666, in Bindersleben, a small town near Erfurt in Thuringia, Germany. His father, Johann Heinrich Buttstedt Sr., was also a musician and served as the organist at the local church. It is likely that Buttstedt received his early musical training from his father. Buttstedt's musical talent was evident from a young age, and he quickly became known as a skilled organist and composer. In 1684, at the age of 18, he was appointed as the organist at the Church of St. Boniface in Erfurt, a position he held for the next 12 years. During this time, he also served as the court organist for the Duke of Saxe-Weimar. In 1696, Buttstedt was appointed as the court organist for the Duke of Saxe-Gotha-Altenburg, a position he held until his death. He also served as the music director for the court, overseeing the musical activities of the court chapel and composing music for various occasions. Buttstedt's compositional output was relatively small, but his works are notable for their technical skill and musical complexity. He is best known for his keyboard music, particularly his organ works. His most famous work is the Prelude and Fugue in E minor, which is considered one of the finest examples of Baroque organ music. Buttstedt's keyboard music is characterized by its intricate counterpoint and use of chromaticism. His works often feature complex fugues and canons, and he was known for his skill in improvisation. In addition to his keyboard music, Buttstedt also composed vocal music, including cantatas and motets. Despite his talent and success as a composer and organist, Buttstedt's life was not without its difficulties. He suffered from poor health throughout his life, and his financial situation was often precarious. In 1716, he was forced to sell his house and most of his possessions to pay off his debts. Buttstedt died on April 1, 1727, in Gotha, Germany, at the age of 60. Despite his relatively short life and limited output, he is remembered as one of the most talented composers of his time, and his music continues to be performed and admired today.More....
