Smithills School Junior Choir is a renowned classical music artist that has been captivating audiences with their angelic voices for over four decades. The choir was founded in 1977 by the then head of music at Smithills School, Bolton, England, Mr. David Holroyd. The choir started with just 30 members, but over the years, it has grown to become one of the most respected junior choirs in the world. The choir's early years were marked by hard work and dedication. Mr. Holroyd was a strict but caring teacher who instilled discipline and a love for music in his students. Under his guidance, the choir quickly gained a reputation for excellence, winning numerous awards and accolades. One of the choir's earliest highlights was their performance at the prestigious Llangollen International Musical Eisteddfod in 1980. The choir wowed the judges with their rendition of "The Lord Bless You and Keep You" by John Rutter, winning first prize in the junior choir category. This was the first of many awards that the choir would win over the years. In 1982, the choir was invited to perform at the Royal Albert Hall in London as part of the Schools Prom. This was a huge honor for the choir, and they rose to the occasion, delivering a flawless performance that left the audience spellbound. The choir's performance was so impressive that they were invited back to the Royal Albert Hall the following year. Over the years, the choir has performed at some of the most prestigious venues in the world, including the Sydney Opera House, Carnegie Hall, and the Vatican. They have also collaborated with some of the biggest names in classical music, including Sir Karl Jenkins, John Rutter, and Howard Goodall. One of the choir's most memorable performances was their rendition of "The Armed Man: A Mass for Peace" by Sir Karl Jenkins. The choir performed the piece at the Royal Albert Hall in 2002, as part of the BBC Proms. The performance was broadcast live on BBC Radio 3 and was later released on CD. The choir's performance was widely praised, with critics hailing it as one of the best performances of the piece ever recorded. The choir has also been recognized for their charitable work. In 2010, the choir released a charity single, "The Rose," to raise money for the Christie Hospital in Manchester. The single was a huge success, raising over £10,000 for the hospital. Over the years, the choir has undergone several changes in personnel, but their commitment to excellence has remained constant. The choir's current director, Mrs. Louise Renshaw, took over from Mr. Holroyd in 2012. Under her guidance, the choir has continued to go from strength to strength, winning numerous awards and accolades. In 2018, the choir won the BBC Songs of Praise Junior Choir of the Year competition. The competition, which is open to junior choirs from across the UK, is one of the most prestigious in the country. The choir's performance of "The Lord Bless You and Keep You" by John Rutter was widely praised, with the judges hailing the choir's "impeccable technique and beautiful tone." The choir's success over the years can be attributed to their dedication, hard work, and love for music. They have inspired countless young people to take up singing and have brought joy to audiences around the world. The choir's legacy will continue to live on for generations to come, as they continue to inspire and delight audiences with their angelic voices.
