Samantha Ege is a British classical pianist, composer, and educator. She was born on August 17, 1989, in London, England. Ege grew up in a family of musicians, and her parents were both music teachers. She started playing the piano at the age of four and showed exceptional talent from an early age. Ege attended the Purcell School of Music in London, where she studied with pianist Tessa Nicholson. She then went on to study at the Royal Academy of Music, where she earned a Bachelor of Music degree with first-class honors. She continued her studies at the Royal Academy of Music, earning a Master of Music degree with distinction. Ege has performed extensively throughout the United Kingdom and Europe, as well as in the United States and Asia. She has performed at prestigious venues such as the Wigmore Hall, the Royal Festival Hall, and the Barbican Centre in London, as well as the Carnegie Hall in New York City. One of Ege's most notable performances was her debut recital at the Wigmore Hall in 2016. The recital, titled "The Piano Music of Florence Price," featured works by the African-American composer Florence Price, who was largely overlooked during her lifetime. Ege's performance received critical acclaim, and she was praised for bringing attention to Price's music. Ege has also been recognized for her work as a composer. In 2018, she was awarded the Royal Philharmonic Society Composition Prize for her piece "Heritage," which was inspired by the music of Florence Price. The prize is awarded annually to a young composer who shows exceptional promise. In addition to her work as a performer and composer, Ege is also an educator. She has taught piano at the Royal Academy of Music and the University of York, and she has given masterclasses and workshops throughout the United Kingdom and Europe. Ege is known for her commitment to promoting diversity and inclusion in classical music. She has spoken out about the lack of representation of women and people of color in classical music, and she has worked to bring attention to the music of underrepresented composers. In 2020, Ege released her debut album, "Fantasie Nègre: The Piano Music of Florence Price." The album features works by Florence Price, as well as pieces by other African-American composers such as Margaret Bonds and William Grant Still. The album received critical acclaim and was named one of the best classical albums of the year by The Guardian. Ege's work as a performer, composer, and educator has earned her numerous accolades and awards. In addition to the Royal Philharmonic Society Composition Prize, she has been awarded the Tillett Trust Young Artist Platform, the Making Music Award for Young Concert Artists, and the Royal Academy of Music's Patrons' Award. Overall, Samantha Ege is a talented and accomplished classical pianist, composer, and educator.
