His father was a violinist, and his mother was a pianist. Charles showed an early interest in music and began playing the piano at the age of five. At the age of ten, Charles began studying music theory and composition with his father. He quickly showed a talent for composition and began writing his own music. By the age of sixteen, he had composed several pieces for piano and had begun studying orchestration. In 1842, Charles entered the Paris Conservatory, where he studied composition with François Bazin and orchestration with Hector Berlioz. He quickly distinguished himself as a talented composer and won several awards for his compositions. After graduating from the conservatory in 1846, Charles began working as a freelance composer. He wrote music for the theater, including several operas and ballets. His first opera, La Fille du Roi, premiered in 1850 and was well-received by audiences and critics alike. In 1855, Charles was commissioned to write music for the Exposition Universelle in Paris. He composed a grand symphony for the occasion, which was performed by a massive orchestra of over 500 musicians. The symphony was a huge success and established Charles as one of the leading composers of his time. Over the next several years, Charles continued to write music for the theater and for orchestras. He composed several more operas, including Les Noces de Figaro and Carmen, which became some of the most popular operas of the 19th century. In addition to his work as a composer, Charles was also a respected music critic. He wrote for several newspapers and magazines, including Le Figaro and La Revue des Deux Mondes.
