Benjamin Koppel is a Danish classical music artist who has made a name for himself as a composer, saxophonist, and conductor. Born on March 8, 1974, in Copenhagen, Denmark, Koppel grew up in a family of musicians. His father, Anders Koppel, is a renowned composer and pianist, while his mother, Lone Koppel, is a singer and pianist. Koppel's grandfather, Herman D. Koppel, was also a composer and pianist. Koppel began playing the saxophone at the age of six and was soon recognized as a prodigy. He studied at the Royal Danish Academy of Music in Copenhagen and later at the Manhattan School of Music in New York City. Koppel's early influences included jazz legends such as John Coltrane and Charlie Parker, as well as classical composers like Bach and Stravinsky. Koppel's career as a classical music artist began in the early 1990s when he formed the Benjamin Koppel Quartet. The group quickly gained a following in Denmark and went on to perform at major jazz festivals around the world. Koppel's unique blend of classical and jazz music earned him critical acclaim and numerous awards, including the prestigious Danish Music Award for Best Jazz Album in 2001. In addition to his work as a saxophonist, Koppel is also an accomplished composer. He has written music for a variety of ensembles, including orchestras, chamber groups, and jazz bands.
