Roi Fernandes de Santiago was a renowned classical music composer born on May 12, 1925, in Santiago de Compostela, Spain. He was the youngest of four siblings and grew up in a family that was passionate about music. His father was a music teacher, and his mother was a pianist. Roi's parents recognized his musical talent at an early age and encouraged him to pursue a career in music. Roi began his musical education at the age of six, studying piano and music theory with his mother. He showed exceptional talent and quickly progressed to more advanced studies. At the age of ten, he began studying composition with his father, who was a respected composer in his own right. Roi's father taught him the fundamentals of music composition and helped him develop his own unique style. In 1943, Roi enrolled at the Madrid Royal Conservatory of Music, where he studied composition with Joaquín Rodrigo, one of Spain's most prominent composers. Rodrigo was impressed with Roi's talent and encouraged him to continue his studies in Paris. In 1947, Roi moved to Paris and enrolled at the Conservatoire de Paris, where he studied composition with Olivier Messiaen and Nadia Boulanger. During his time in Paris, Roi was exposed to a wide range of musical styles and began to develop his own unique voice as a composer. He was particularly influenced by the works of Debussy, Ravel, and Stravinsky, as well as the Spanish composers Manuel de Falla and Joaquín Rodrigo. Roi's early works were characterized by their lyrical melodies, rich harmonies, and intricate rhythms. His music was deeply rooted in the Spanish musical tradition, but also incorporated elements of French impressionism and modernism. His compositions were well-received by audiences and critics alike, and he quickly established himself as one of Spain's most promising young composers. In 1952, Roi returned to Spain and began teaching composition at the Madrid Royal Conservatory of Music. He continued to compose prolifically, producing a wide range of works for orchestra, chamber ensembles, and solo instruments. His music was performed by some of the world's leading orchestras and ensembles, including the London Symphony Orchestra, the Berlin Philharmonic, and the New York Philharmonic. One of Roi's most famous works is his Concerto for Guitar and Orchestra, which he composed in 1958. The concerto was written for the Spanish guitarist Andrés Segovia, who premiered the work with the London Symphony Orchestra in 1959. The concerto is characterized by its virtuosic guitar writing, lush orchestration, and Spanish-inspired melodies. It has since become one of the most popular works in the guitar repertoire and has been recorded by numerous guitarists. Another notable work by Roi is his Symphony No. 1, which he composed in 1965. The symphony is a large-scale work for orchestra that showcases Roi's mastery of orchestration and his ability to create powerful musical narratives. The symphony is divided into four movements, each of which explores a different mood and musical idea. The work has been performed by orchestras around the world and is considered one of Roi's most important contributions to the orchestral repertoire. Throughout his career, Roi remained committed to promoting Spanish music and culture. He was a founding member of the Spanish Society of Contemporary Music and worked tirelessly to promote the works of young Spanish composers.
