Role:EnsembleHouston Sinfonia is a classical music ensemble based in Houston, Texas. The group was founded in 2000 by conductor and music director, Dr. Darryl Bayer. The ensemble is made up of professional musicians from the Houston area and has gained a reputation for its high-quality performances and innovative programming. Dr. Bayer, a native of Houston, received his Bachelor of Music degree from the University of Houston and his Master of Music and Doctor of Musical Arts degrees from the University of Michigan. He has conducted orchestras throughout the United States and Europe and has been a guest conductor with the Houston Symphony Orchestra, the Houston Ballet, and the Houston Grand Opera. Under Dr. Bayer's leadership, Houston Sinfonia has become one of the most respected classical music ensembles in the Houston area. The group has performed at some of the city's most prestigious venues, including Jones Hall, the Wortham Theater Center, and the Hobby Center for the Performing Arts. One of the highlights of Houston Sinfonia's early years was its performance of Beethoven's Ninth Symphony in 2003. The concert, which featured the Houston Symphony Chorus and soloists from the Houston Grand Opera, was a critical and commercial success. The Houston Chronicle praised the ensemble's "crisp, energetic playing" and Dr. Bayer's "clear and expressive conducting." In 2005, Houston Sinfonia was invited to perform at the prestigious Texas Music Festival. The festival, which is held annually at the University of Houston, brings together some of the most talented young musicians from around the world for a series of concerts and masterclasses. Houston Sinfonia's performance was a highlight of the festival, and the ensemble received a standing ovation from the audience. Over the years, Houston Sinfonia has collaborated with some of the most talented musicians in the Houston area. In 2007, the ensemble performed with renowned pianist Jon Kimura Parker in a concert that featured works by Mozart, Beethoven, and Brahms. The Houston Chronicle praised the ensemble's "sensitive and nuanced playing" and Parker's "virtuosic and expressive" performance. In 2010, Houston Sinfonia was awarded a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts to support its educational outreach programs. The ensemble has a strong commitment to music education and regularly performs for school groups and community organizations throughout the Houston area. The grant allowed Houston Sinfonia to expand its outreach efforts and reach even more young people with its music. In 2012, Houston Sinfonia celebrated its 10th anniversary with a series of concerts that featured some of the ensemble's most popular works. The concerts were a tribute to the group's dedication to classical music and its commitment to bringing the highest quality performances to the Houston community.
