Thomas Mulvaney was born on May 12, 1985, in New York City. He grew up in a family of musicians, with his father being a professional pianist and his mother a violinist. From a young age, Mulvaney showed a natural talent for music, and his parents encouraged him to pursue his passion. Mulvaney began his formal music education at the age of six, studying piano with his father. He quickly progressed and started performing in public at the age of eight. At the age of ten, he started studying violin with his mother, and by the age of twelve, he was performing as a soloist with local orchestras. In 1998, Mulvaney was accepted into the Juilliard School's Pre-College Division, where he continued his studies in both piano and violin. He received numerous awards and scholarships during his time at Juilliard, including the prestigious Dorothy DeLay Scholarship for violin. After graduating from Juilliard, Mulvaney continued his studies at the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia, where he studied with renowned violinist Ida Kavafian. During his time at Curtis, Mulvaney won several competitions, including the Philadelphia Orchestra Concerto Competition and the Curtis Concerto Competition. Mulvaney's professional career began in 2007 when he was appointed as the concertmaster of the New York Philharmonic. He held this position for five years, during which time he performed as a soloist with the orchestra and toured extensively throughout the world. In 2012, Mulvaney left the New York Philharmonic to pursue a solo career. He has since performed as a soloist with many of the world's leading orchestras, including the Berlin Philharmonic, the London Symphony Orchestra, and the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. Mulvaney is also an active chamber musician and has performed with many of the world's leading chamber ensembles, including the Emerson String Quartet and the Guarneri Quartet. He is a founding member of the Mulvaney Piano Trio, which has received critical acclaim for its performances and recordings. Mulvaney's recordings have received numerous awards and accolades, including a Grammy Award for Best Chamber Music Performance in 2015. He has recorded for many of the world's leading record labels, including Deutsche Grammophon, Sony Classical, and Naxos. In addition to his performing career, Mulvaney is also a dedicated teacher. He has taught at the Juilliard School, the Curtis Institute of Music, and the Manhattan School of Music. Many of his students have gone on to successful careers as professional musicians.
