He was born in Grodkowice, a small village in the southeastern part of Poland. His father was a landowner and amateur musician, and his mother was a talented singer. Zelenski showed an early interest in music and began taking piano lessons at the age of six. Zelenski's family moved to Krakow when he was ten years old, and he continued his musical education there. He studied piano with Jozef Elsner, who was also the teacher of Frederic Chopin. Zelenski showed great promise as a pianist, but he was also interested in composition. He began writing music at a young age and had his first composition published when he was just 16 years old. In 1856, Zelenski went to study music in Berlin, where he studied composition with Friedrich Kiel and piano with Theodor Kullak. He also attended lectures by the famous musicologist Philipp Spitta. Zelenski returned to Krakow in 1860 and began teaching at the Krakow Conservatory. He also became involved in the city's musical life, conducting concerts and performing as a pianist. Zelenski's early compositions were influenced by the Romantic style of Chopin and Schumann. He wrote many works for piano, including sonatas, nocturnes, and mazurkas. He also wrote chamber music, including string quartets and piano trios. In 1876, he wrote his first symphony, which was well-received and performed by the Krakow Philharmonic. Zelenski's music continued to evolve throughout his career. He became interested in the music of the Russian composers, particularly Tchaikovsky and Rimsky-Korsakov. He also began incorporating elements of Polish folk music into his compositions. His later works are characterized by a more nationalistic style, with a focus on Polish themes and melodies. One of Zelenski's most famous works is his Piano Concerto in E-flat major, which he wrote in 1885. The concerto is a virtuosic showcase for the soloist, with a lyrical second movement and a lively finale. It has become a staple of the piano concerto repertoire and is still performed today. Zelenski also wrote several operas, including Don Vasco, which premiered in 1896. The opera is based on a historical figure, Vasco da Gama, and tells the story of his voyage to India. The music is characterized by its lush orchestration and use of Polish folk melodies. In addition to his work as a composer, Zelenski was also a respected music educator. He taught at the Krakow Conservatory for over 40 years and was known for his dedication to his students. Many of his pupils went on to become successful musicians and composers in their own right. Zelenski's contributions to Polish music were recognized during his lifetime. He was awarded the Order of Polonia Restituta, one of Poland's highest honors, in 1921. He died three years later at the age of 87. Today, Zelenski's music is still performed and recorded. His Piano Concerto and Symphony No. 2 are particularly popular. His legacy as a composer and educator continues to inspire musicians in Poland and around the world.More....
