Paul Murtha was born on August 29, 1960, in Johnstown, Pennsylvania. He grew up in a musical family, with his father playing the trumpet and his mother playing the piano. Murtha began playing the trumpet at a young age and quickly showed a talent for music. He attended the Indiana University of Pennsylvania, where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Music Education. After college, Murtha began his career as a music educator, teaching at various schools in Pennsylvania. He also continued to play the trumpet and became involved in arranging and composing music. In 1990, he joined the staff of Hal Leonard Corporation, a music publishing company, where he worked as an editor and arranger. Murtha's compositions and arrangements quickly gained popularity, and he became known for his ability to create music that was both challenging and accessible to young musicians. His works have been performed by school bands and orchestras around the world, and he has received numerous awards and honors for his contributions to music education. One of Murtha's most popular works is his arrangement of "The Star-Spangled Banner," which has been performed at major sporting events and ceremonies across the United States. He has also composed original works, such as "The Great Locomotive Chase," which tells the story of a Civil War-era train heist, and "The Redwoods," which celebrates the beauty of California's giant trees. In addition to his work as a composer and arranger, Murtha has also been involved in music education advocacy. He has served on the board of directors for the National Association for Music Education and has been a frequent speaker at music education conferences and events. Despite his success, Murtha remains humble and dedicated to his craft. He continues to compose and arrange music, and his works are enjoyed by musicians and audiences around the world.
