The Borealis String Quartet is a Canadian classical music ensemble that has been captivating audiences with their exceptional performances for over two decades. The quartet was founded in 2000 by four talented musicians who shared a passion for chamber music and a desire to create a unique sound that would set them apart from other ensembles. The founding members of the Borealis String Quartet were Patricia Shih and Yuel Yawney on violin, Nikita Pogrebnoy on viola, and Sungyong Lim on cello. All four musicians had extensive experience performing with other ensembles and orchestras before coming together to form the Borealis String Quartet. The quartet quickly gained recognition for their exceptional musicianship and unique sound. They were invited to perform at some of the most prestigious music festivals in Canada and the United States, including the Banff Centre for the Arts, the Vancouver Chamber Music Festival, and the Seattle Chamber Music Festival. One of the highlights of the Borealis String Quartet's early career was their performance at the 2001 Banff International String Quartet Competition. The quartet was awarded the top prize, which included a recording contract with Naxos Records and a tour of North America and Europe. Since then, the Borealis String Quartet has continued to impress audiences and critics alike with their exceptional performances and innovative programming. They have released several critically acclaimed recordings, including their debut album, "Borealis," which was released in 2003. In addition to their performances and recordings, the Borealis String Quartet is also committed to music education. They have worked with students of all ages and levels, from elementary school children to university students, and have conducted masterclasses and workshops across Canada and the United States. The Borealis String Quartet has undergone some changes in its membership over the years, but the quartet's commitment to excellence and innovation has remained constant. Today, the quartet is comprised of Patricia Shih and Yuel Yawney on violin, Nicholas Wright on viola, and Sungyong Lim on cello. Some of the quartet's most notable performances in recent years include their appearance at the 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympics, where they performed for an international audience of millions, and their collaboration with the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra in 2015, where they performed Beethoven's String Quartet No. 14 in C-sharp minor, Op. 131. The Borealis String Quartet has also received numerous awards and accolades throughout their career. In addition to their win at the Banff International String Quartet Competition, they have been awarded the prestigious Juno Award for Classical Album of the Year twice, in 2006 and 2018. Overall, the Borealis String Quartet is a remarkable ensemble that has made a significant contribution to the world of classical music. Their commitment to excellence, innovation, and music education has earned them a well-deserved reputation as one of Canada's finest chamber music ensembles.
