Nancy Karpeles was born on May 22, 1930, in New York City. She grew up in a family of musicians, with her father being a violinist and her mother a pianist. From a young age, Karpeles showed a natural talent for music and began studying the piano and violin. She also showed an interest in composition and began writing her own music at the age of 12. Karpeles attended the Juilliard School of Music in New York City, where she studied composition with Vincent Persichetti and piano with Rosina Lhévinne. She graduated with a Bachelor of Music degree in 1951 and went on to earn a Master of Music degree from the same institution in 1952. After completing her studies, Karpeles began working as a freelance composer and pianist. She wrote music for a variety of ensembles, including orchestras, chamber groups, and solo performers. Her compositions were often characterized by their lyrical melodies, rich harmonies, and intricate rhythms. One of Karpeles' most notable works is her Piano Concerto, which was premiered by the New York Philharmonic in 1957. The concerto is a virtuosic showcase for the soloist, with fast runs and intricate passagework. The second movement is particularly beautiful, with a haunting melody that is passed between the piano and orchestra. Karpeles also wrote a number of chamber works, including several string quartets. Her String Quartet No. 1, which was premiered in 1962, is a particularly fine example of her chamber music. The work is characterized by its lush harmonies and intricate counterpoint, and it showcases Karpeles' skill at writing for string instruments. In addition to her work as a composer, Karpeles was also an accomplished pianist. She often performed her own works in concert, as well as the works of other composers. She was particularly fond of the music of Beethoven and Chopin, and her performances of their works were highly praised by critics. Karpeles was also a dedicated teacher, and she taught composition and piano at several institutions throughout her career. She was known for her patient and encouraging teaching style, and many of her students went on to have successful careers in music. Throughout her life, Karpeles remained dedicated to her craft, and she continued to compose and perform well into her later years. She passed away on January 22, 2017, at the age of 86, leaving behind a legacy of beautiful music and a generation of students who were inspired by her passion and dedication to the art of music.
