Georgi Zlatev-Cherkin was a Bulgarian composer, pianist, and conductor who made significant contributions to the classical music scene in Bulgaria during the 20th century. He was born on January 1, 1905, in the town of Plovdiv, Bulgaria, to a family of musicians. His father, Zlatyu Cherkin, was a renowned conductor and composer, and his mother, Maria Zlateva, was a pianist and music teacher. Zlatev-Cherkin showed an early interest in music and began studying piano with his mother at the age of four. He later studied with some of the most prominent Bulgarian musicians of the time, including Dobri Hristov and Pancho Vladigerov. In 1924, he enrolled at the State Academy of Music in Sofia, where he studied composition with Dobri Hristov and conducting with Konstantin Iliev. After completing his studies, Zlatev-Cherkin began his career as a composer and conductor. He quickly gained recognition for his talent and was appointed conductor of the Sofia Philharmonic Orchestra in 1930. He held this position for over 30 years and helped to establish the orchestra as one of the leading ensembles in Bulgaria. Zlatev-Cherkin's compositions were heavily influenced by Bulgarian folk music, and he often incorporated traditional melodies and rhythms into his works. He was also influenced by the works of other composers, including Bach, Beethoven, and Brahms. His music was characterized by its lyricism, harmonic richness, and emotional depth. One of Zlatev-Cherkin's most famous works is his Piano Concerto No. 1, which he composed in 1933. The concerto is a virtuosic showcase for the soloist and features a lively and energetic first movement, a lyrical second movement, and a lively and rhythmic third movement. The concerto has become a staple of the Bulgarian classical music repertoire and is still performed regularly today. Another notable work by Zlatev-Cherkin is his Symphony No. 1, which he composed in 1940. The symphony is a powerful and emotional work that reflects the turbulent times in which it was composed. The first movement is marked by its dramatic intensity, while the second movement is more introspective and reflective. The third movement is a lively and energetic dance, while the fourth movement is a triumphant finale that brings the work to a thrilling conclusion. Zlatev-Cherkin also composed a number of choral works, including his Requiem, which he composed in 1955. The Requiem is a powerful and emotional work that reflects the composer's deep religious faith. It features a large chorus and orchestra and is marked by its soaring melodies and rich harmonies. In addition to his work as a composer, Zlatev-Cherkin was also a respected conductor. He conducted many of his own works as well as those of other composers, and he was known for his passionate and expressive interpretations. He was also a dedicated teacher and mentor, and many of his students went on to become successful musicians in their own right. Zlatev-Cherkin continued to compose and conduct well into his later years. He died on December 31, 1977, in Sofia, Bulgaria, at the age of 72. His legacy as one of Bulgaria's greatest composers and musicians lives on, and his works continue to be performed and celebrated by musicians and audiences around the world.
