He studied at the Conservatoire de Luxembourg and later at the Hochschule für Musik und Tanz Köln in Germany. He also studied composition with renowned composers such as Wolfgang Rihm and Hans Werner Henze. Wiltgen's music is characterized by its lyrical and expressive qualities, as well as its use of traditional forms and structures. He was influenced by a wide range of composers, including Bach, Beethoven, Chopin, and Debussy, as well as contemporary composers such as Arvo Pärt and John Adams. Wiltgen's early works were primarily for solo piano, and he gained recognition for his virtuosic and expressive playing.
