Lyric Fest
Artist Info

Lyric Fest is a classical music ensemble based in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Founded in 2003 by mezzo-soprano Suzanne DuPlantis and pianist Laura Ward, the ensemble is dedicated to celebrating the art of song through innovative programming and collaborations with local artists and organizations. DuPlantis and Ward, both accomplished musicians with extensive experience in the classical music world, saw a need for a chamber music ensemble that focused specifically on the art of song. They wanted to create a space where singers and pianists could come together to explore the rich repertoire of vocal music, from classical lieder to contemporary art songs. With this vision in mind, DuPlantis and Ward founded Lyric Fest and began organizing concerts and recitals throughout the Philadelphia area. They quickly gained a reputation for their innovative programming, which often featured lesser-known works alongside more familiar pieces. They also made a point of collaborating with local artists and organizations, such as the Philadelphia Museum of Art and the Curtis Institute of Music, to create unique and engaging performances. Over the years, Lyric Fest has grown to include a core group of musicians, including DuPlantis and Ward, as well as sopranos Randi Marrazzo and Sarah Shafer, tenor Jonas Hacker, and baritone Daniel Teadt. These musicians have become known for their exceptional artistry and their ability to bring new life to even the most familiar songs. One of the highlights of Lyric Fest's career was their 2013 performance of Benjamin Britten's War Requiem, which was presented in collaboration with the Mendelssohn Club of Philadelphia and the Chamber Orchestra of Philadelphia. This powerful work, which was written in response to the horrors of World War II, features a large chorus, orchestra, and soloists, and is considered one of the most important choral works of the 20th century. Lyric Fest's performance of the War Requiem was widely praised for its emotional depth and musical excellence. The Philadelphia Inquirer called it "a stunning performance" and praised the ensemble for their "impeccable musicianship and emotional commitment." In addition to their performances of larger works like the War Requiem, Lyric Fest is also known for their intimate recitals, which often feature lesser-known works by composers such as Samuel Barber, Ned Rorem, and Jake Heggie. These recitals are a chance for audiences to experience the beauty and power of vocal music up close, and to hear the unique interpretations of some of the finest singers and pianists in the country. Lyric Fest has received numerous awards and accolades over the years, including grants from the National Endowment for the Arts and the William Penn Foundation. They have also been recognized for their commitment to promoting diversity and inclusion in the arts, and have been praised for their efforts to showcase the work of female composers and composers of color. In 2019, Lyric Fest celebrated their 15th anniversary with a series of concerts and events throughout the Philadelphia area. This milestone was a testament to the ensemble's enduring commitment to the art of song, and to their dedication to bringing the beauty and power of vocal music to audiences of all ages and backgrounds. Today, Lyric Fest continues to be a vital part of the Philadelphia arts community, and a leading voice in the world of classical vocal music.
