Henk Alkema was a Dutch composer who was born on December 22, 1944, in Amsterdam, Netherlands. He was the son of a music teacher and grew up in a musical family. His father was a pianist and his mother was a singer, and they both encouraged him to pursue a career in music. Alkema began his musical education at a young age, studying piano and composition with his father. He later attended the Amsterdam Conservatory, where he studied composition with Ton de Leeuw and piano with Jan Wijn. He also studied at the Royal Conservatory in The Hague with Louis Andriessen. Alkema's early works were influenced by the avant-garde music of the 1960s, and he was associated with the Dutch "New Music" movement. His compositions from this period were characterized by their use of unconventional techniques and sounds, such as extended techniques for instruments and electronic music. One of Alkema's early works, "Klankbeeld" (1968), was a piece for tape that used manipulated sounds from everyday life, such as traffic noise and bird calls. Another early work, "Twee stukken voor piano" (1969), was a set of two pieces for piano that used unconventional techniques, such as playing the strings inside the piano. In the 1970s, Alkema's style began to shift towards a more tonal and lyrical approach. He began to incorporate elements of traditional classical music into his compositions, while still maintaining his interest in experimentation and innovation. One of Alkema's most well-known works from this period is "Concerto for Violin and Orchestra" (1977). The piece is characterized by its lush harmonies and virtuosic violin writing, and has been performed by orchestras around the world. In the 1980s, Alkema continued to explore new musical ideas and techniques. He began to incorporate elements of world music into his compositions, such as African rhythms and Indonesian gamelan music. One of Alkema's most notable works from this period is "Kembang Suling" (1985), a piece for gamelan ensemble and orchestra. The piece combines traditional Javanese gamelan music with Western classical music, creating a unique and innovative sound. In addition to his work as a composer, Alkema was also a respected music educator. He taught composition at the Amsterdam Conservatory from 1975 to 2009, and was a mentor to many young composers. Alkema's later works continued to explore new musical ideas and techniques. One of his last works, "Concerto for Cello and Orchestra" (2012), is characterized by its use of extended techniques for the cello, such as playing behind the bridge and using harmonics. Henk Alkema passed away on December 30, 2011, at the age of 67. He left behind a legacy of innovative and influential compositions, and is remembered as one of the most important Dutch composers of the 20th century.
