Alexander Siloti was a Russian pianist, conductor, and composer who was born on October 9, 1863, in Kharkiv, Ukraine. He was born into a family of musicians, and his mother was a pianist who taught him how to play the piano at a young age. Siloti's father was a professor of mathematics, but he was also a talented amateur musician who played the cello and the piano. Siloti's musical talent was evident from a young age, and he began performing in public when he was only six years old. He studied piano with his mother and later with Nikolai Zverev, who was a famous piano teacher in Moscow. Zverev was known for his strict teaching methods, and he had a profound influence on Siloti's musical development. In 1881, Siloti entered the Moscow Conservatory, where he studied piano with Vasily Safonov and composition with Sergei Taneyev. He was an excellent student and won several awards for his performances and compositions. After graduating from the conservatory in 1885, Siloti began his career as a concert pianist and quickly gained a reputation as one of the finest pianists of his generation. Siloti's career as a pianist took him all over the world, and he performed in many of the major concert halls of Europe and the United States. He was particularly known for his performances of the music of Johann Sebastian Bach, and he was one of the first pianists to transcribe Bach's music for the piano. In addition to his career as a pianist, Siloti was also a conductor and composer. He conducted the premieres of several important works, including Tchaikovsky's Symphony No. 6 and Rachmaninoff's Piano Concerto No. 2. As a composer, Siloti wrote music for piano, orchestra, and chamber ensembles. His compositions were influenced by the music of Bach, Chopin, and Liszt, and they were characterized by their virtuosity and lyricism. One of Siloti's most famous compositions is his transcription of Bach's Prelude in B minor for organ. Siloti's transcription is a virtuosic tour de force that showcases the full range of the piano. It has become a staple of the piano repertoire and is still performed by pianists around the world. Another important work by Siloti is his Piano Concerto No. 1 in C minor. The concerto is a virtuosic showpiece for the piano, and it features Siloti's signature blend of lyricism and technical brilliance. The concerto was premiered in 1896 and was well-received by audiences and critics alike. Siloti's other compositions include several works for piano, including his Prelude in E minor and his Etude in B minor. His students included some of the most important pianists of the 20th century, including Sergei Rachmaninoff, Vladimir Horowitz, and Simon Barere. Siloti died on December 8, 1945, in New York City. He was 82 years old. His legacy as a performer, composer, and teacher continues to influence musicians around the world. His transcriptions of Bach's music for the piano are still considered some of the finest ever written, and his compositions continue to be performed and recorded by musicians today.
