Hexnut
Artist Info
Hexnut is a classical music ensemble that was founded in 2012 by six musicians who shared a passion for exploring new sounds and pushing the boundaries of traditional classical music. The group consists of percussionist Bill Solomon, flutist Erin Lesser, clarinetist/composer Chris Grymes, violinist Courtney Orlando, cellist Hannah Collins, and pianist David Friend. The ensemble's name, Hexnut, is a reference to the hexagonal shape of a nut, which represents the group's desire to create music that is both complex and tightly interwoven. The group's mission is to explore the intersection of classical music with other genres, including jazz, rock, and electronic music, and to create new works that challenge both the performers and the audience. Hexnut has performed at some of the most prestigious venues in the United States, including Carnegie Hall, the Kennedy Center, and the Library of Congress. The group has also been featured on NPR's "Performance Today" and has received critical acclaim for its innovative approach to classical music. One of the highlights of Hexnut's career was the premiere of Chris Grymes' "The Idea of Order at Key West" at the Kennedy Center in 2014. The piece, which was inspired by a poem by Wallace Stevens, features a unique blend of classical and jazz elements and showcases the virtuosity of each member of the ensemble. In addition to performing new works, Hexnut is also committed to promoting the music of living composers. The group has commissioned and premiered works by a number of composers, including David Lang, Judd Greenstein, and Ted Hearne. Hexnut has received numerous awards and accolades for its innovative approach to classical music. In 2015, the group was awarded a Chamber Music America Classical Commissioning Grant, which allowed them to commission new works by three composers. The group was also named a finalist for the 2016 American Prize in Chamber Music Performance. Despite its success, Hexnut remains committed to its mission of exploring new sounds and pushing the boundaries of classical music. The group continues to perform and commission new works, and its members are dedicated to collaborating with other musicians and artists to create truly unique and innovative performances.More....
