Thomas Rolfs, Jr. is a renowned classical music artist who has made a significant impact in the world of music. He was born on August 22, 1960, in New York City, USA. His father, Thomas Rolfs Sr., was a trumpet player, and his mother, Mary Rolfs, was a pianist. Growing up in a musical family, Thomas Jr. was exposed to music from a young age and showed a keen interest in playing the trumpet. Thomas Jr. began his musical education at the Juilliard School in New York City, where he studied under the tutelage of William Vacchiano, the principal trumpeter of the New York Philharmonic. He later continued his studies at the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia, where he studied with Frank Kaderabek, the principal trumpeter of the Philadelphia Orchestra. After completing his studies, Thomas Jr. began his professional career as a trumpet player. He joined the Boston Symphony Orchestra in 1985 as the principal trumpet player, a position he held for 25 years. During his time with the Boston Symphony Orchestra, Thomas Jr. performed in numerous concerts and recordings, including the orchestra's Grammy Award-winning recording of Shostakovich's Symphony No. 5. In addition to his work with the Boston Symphony Orchestra, Thomas Jr. has also performed with other major orchestras, including the New York Philharmonic, the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, and the Los Angeles Philharmonic. He has also performed as a soloist with various orchestras, including the Boston Pops Orchestra, the National Symphony Orchestra, and the Tokyo Symphony Orchestra. Thomas Jr. has received numerous awards and accolades throughout his career. In 1994, he was awarded the Avery Fisher Career Grant, which is given to outstanding instrumentalists who show great potential for a solo career. He was chosen to perform the Olympic Fanfare and Theme, which was composed by John Williams specifically for the Olympics. Thomas Jr. is also a dedicated teacher and has taught at various institutions, including the New England Conservatory of Music and the Tanglewood Music Center.
