Deutsche Kammer-Virtuosen Berlin is a classical music ensemble that was founded in 1985 in Berlin, Germany. The ensemble is known for its exceptional performances of chamber music, and has gained a reputation as one of the finest ensembles in Europe. The founding members of the ensemble were all accomplished musicians who had previously played with other orchestras and ensembles. They came together with the goal of creating a chamber music ensemble that would focus on the performance of classical and contemporary works. The founding members of the ensemble were: Rainer Kussmaul (violin), Wolfram Christ (viola), Georg Faust (cello), and Matthias Glander (piano). Since its founding, the ensemble has undergone some changes in its membership, but has remained committed to its original mission of performing chamber music at the highest level. The current members of the ensemble are: Rainer Kussmaul (violin), Daniel Gaede (violin), Wolfram Christ (viola), Georg Faust (cello), and Janne Saksala (double bass). The ensemble has performed extensively throughout Europe, Asia, and North America, and has collaborated with some of the world's most renowned musicians. Some of the highlights of the ensemble's performances include their appearances at the Salzburg Festival, the Berliner Festwochen, and the Schleswig-Holstein Musik Festival. In addition to their live performances, the ensemble has also recorded extensively, with over 30 albums to their name. Their recordings have received critical acclaim and have won numerous awards, including the Diapason d'Or, the Preis der Deutschen Schallplattenkritik, and the Echo Klassik. One of the ensemble's most notable performances was their collaboration with the renowned pianist Martha Argerich. The ensemble and Argerich performed together at the Berliner Festwochen in 1990, and their performance was widely praised for its virtuosity and musicality. Another highlight of the ensemble's career was their performance of Beethoven's complete string quartets at the Schleswig-Holstein Musik Festival in 2003.
