He then went on to earn a Doctor of Musical Arts degree in composition from the University of Washington. Throughout his career, Bartholomew has composed a wide range of works, including choral music, chamber music, and orchestral music. His compositions have been performed by numerous ensembles and orchestras, including the Seattle Symphony, the Northwest Chamber Orchestra, and the Seattle Choral Company. One of Bartholomew's most notable works is his choral piece "Three Whitman Settings," which was inspired by the poetry of Walt Whitman. The piece was commissioned by the Seattle Choral Company and premiered in 2005. It has since been performed by numerous choirs around the world. Another notable work by Bartholomew is his chamber piece "String Quartet No. 3," which was commissioned by the Northwest Chamber Orchestra and premiered in 2010.
