Greg Bartholomew is a contemporary classical music composer who was born in 1957 in the United States. He grew up in a musical family, with his mother being a pianist and his father a singer. Bartholomew began playing the piano at a young age and later learned to play the trumpet and guitar. He attended the University of Washington, where he earned a Bachelor of Music degree in composition. After completing his undergraduate studies, Bartholomew continued his education at the University of Michigan, where he earned a Master of Music degree in composition. He then went on to earn a Doctor of Musical Arts degree in composition from the University of Washington. Throughout his career, Bartholomew has composed a wide range of works, including choral music, chamber music, and orchestral music. His compositions have been performed by numerous ensembles and orchestras, including the Seattle Symphony, the Northwest Chamber Orchestra, and the Seattle Choral Company. One of Bartholomew's most notable works is his choral piece "Three Whitman Settings," which was inspired by the poetry of Walt Whitman. The piece was commissioned by the Seattle Choral Company and premiered in 2005. It has since been performed by numerous choirs around the world. Another notable work by Bartholomew is his chamber piece "String Quartet No. 3," which was commissioned by the Northwest Chamber Orchestra and premiered in 2010. The piece is known for its intricate harmonies and complex rhythms. In addition to his work as a composer, Bartholomew is also a music educator. He has taught at several universities, including the University of Puget Sound and the Cornish College of the Arts. He has also served as a guest lecturer and clinician at numerous schools and music festivals. Bartholomew's compositions have received numerous awards and accolades over the years. In 2015, he was awarded the American Prize in Composition for his choral piece "In Paradisum." He has also been a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize in Music.
