New York Kammermusiker is a classical music ensemble that was founded in 1984 by flutist and artistic director Ilonna Pederson. The group is based in New York City and is known for its innovative programming and virtuosic performances. The ensemble's founding members included Pederson, violinist Elmira Darvarova, cellist Frederick Zlotkin, and pianist Linda Hall. Over the years, the group has expanded to include a rotating roster of musicians, including some of the most talented instrumentalists in the world. One of the hallmarks of New York Kammermusiker's performances is their commitment to exploring the connections between different musical genres and styles. The group's repertoire includes works from the Baroque, Classical, Romantic, and contemporary periods, as well as pieces that draw on jazz, folk, and world music traditions. In addition to their regular concert series in New York City, New York Kammermusiker has performed at major venues and festivals around the world. Some of their most notable performances include appearances at the Salzburg Festival, the Edinburgh Festival, and the Mostly Mozart Festival in New York. The ensemble has also collaborated with a wide range of artists, including jazz pianist Chick Corea, singer-songwriter Suzanne Vega, and actor John Malkovich. These collaborations have resulted in some of the group's most memorable performances, such as their rendition of Corea's "Spain" and their interpretation of Samuel Beckett's "Words and Music." Over the years, New York Kammermusiker has received numerous awards and accolades for their performances and recordings. In 1992, the group won a Grammy Award for their recording of Mozart's "Sinfonia Concertante" with the English Chamber Orchestra. They have also been praised by critics for their recordings of works by Bach, Vivaldi, and other composers. Despite the challenges facing classical music ensembles in the 21st century, New York Kammermusiker has continued to thrive and innovate. The group's commitment to exploring new musical territory and collaborating with artists from different genres and backgrounds has helped them to remain relevant and engaging to audiences around the world.
