Born on January 1, 1916, in Rome, Italy, Onesti showed an early interest in music and began studying the piano at the age of six. He later went on to study composition and conducting at the Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia in Rome. Onesti's career as a conductor began in the early 1940s when he was appointed as the assistant conductor of the Rome Opera House. He quickly gained recognition for his talent and was soon appointed as the principal conductor of the Rome Opera House. During his tenure, he conducted numerous operas, including works by Verdi, Puccini, and Mozart. In 1952, Onesti was invited to conduct the Orchestra Sinfonica di Milano della RAI, one of the most prestigious orchestras in Italy. He quickly established himself as a leading conductor and was soon invited to conduct orchestras all over Europe. He also made several recordings with the Orchestra Sinfonica di Milano della RAI, which were highly acclaimed by critics and audiences alike. Onesti's international career took off in the 1960s when he was invited to conduct the London Symphony Orchestra. He quickly gained a reputation as one of the most talented conductors of his generation and was soon in demand by orchestras all over the world. He conducted the New York Philharmonic, the Boston Symphony Orchestra, the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, and the Berlin Philharmonic, among others. One of the highlights of Onesti's career was his appointment as the principal conductor of the Teatro alla Scala in Milan in 1972. This was a highly prestigious position, and Onesti was only the second Italian conductor to hold the post in over 50 years. During his tenure, he conducted numerous operas, including works by Verdi, Puccini, and Rossini. He also conducted several concerts with the orchestra, which were highly acclaimed by critics and audiences alike. Onesti was also a highly respected music educator and was appointed as the director of the Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia in Rome in 1973. He held this position for over a decade and was instrumental in transforming the academy into one of the most prestigious music schools in the world. He also taught conducting at the Accademia Chigiana in Siena and the Mozarteum in Salzburg. Onesti's contributions to the world of classical music were recognized with numerous awards and honors. He was awarded the Order of Merit of the Italian Republic in 1967 and was made a Knight of the Grand Cross of the Order of Merit of the Italian Republic in 1981. He was also awarded the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany in 1976 and the Order of Merit of the Republic of Austria in 1981. Giorgio Onesti passed away on December 1, 1988, in Rome, Italy. He left behind a legacy as one of the most talented conductors and music educators of his generation.
