Steve Tittle was a Canadian composer and musician who was born on May 22, 1954, in Toronto, Ontario. He grew up in a musical family, with his father being a jazz pianist and his mother a singer. Tittle began playing the piano at a young age and showed a natural talent for music. He later studied composition at the University of Toronto, where he earned a Bachelor of Music degree in 1976. Tittle's early works were heavily influenced by the minimalist movement, which was popular in the 1970s. His compositions often featured repetitive patterns and simple harmonies, but he also experimented with electronic music and soundscapes. One of his most notable early works was "Piano Piece No. 1," which was composed in 1975 and featured a repetitive, hypnotic melody. In the 1980s, Tittle began to incorporate more traditional classical elements into his music. He composed several works for chamber ensembles, including "String Quartet No. 1" and "Wind Quintet No. 1." These works showcased Tittle's ability to blend modern and classical styles, and they were well-received by audiences and critics alike. Tittle's most famous work is his opera, "The Rise and Fall of the City of Mahagonny," which was composed in 1990. The opera is based on a play by Bertolt Brecht and tells the story of a city where money is the only value. Tittle's score for the opera is complex and challenging, featuring a wide range of musical styles and influences. The opera was premiered in Toronto in 1991 and was later performed in several other cities, including New York and Berlin. In addition to his work as a composer, Tittle was also a respected music educator. He taught composition and music theory at several universities, including the University of Toronto and the University of British Columbia. He was known for his innovative teaching methods and his ability to inspire his students to explore new musical ideas. Tittle's music has been performed by many prominent musicians and ensembles, including the Toronto Symphony Orchestra, the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra, and the Canadian Opera Company. His work has been praised for its originality, complexity, and emotional depth. Sadly, Tittle passed away on December 28, 2017, at the age of 63. His legacy as a composer and educator lives on, however, through his music and the many students he inspired over the years. Tittle's contributions to the world of classical music will continue to be celebrated and appreciated for generations to come.
