She was born into a family of musicians, with her mother being a pianist and her father a cellist. From a young age, Basinia showed a natural talent for music and began playing the cello at the age of four. Basinia's parents recognized her talent and encouraged her to pursue a career in music. She began studying at the Moscow Conservatory at the age of seven, where she was trained by some of the most renowned cellists in the world. Basinia's talent and dedication to her craft quickly became apparent, and she began to receive recognition for her performances. At the age of 12, Basinia won first prize in the International Tchaikovsky Competition for Young Musicians. This was a significant achievement for such a young musician and helped to launch her career. Basinia continued to win awards and accolades throughout her teenage years, including first prize in the International Antonio Janigro Cello Competition and the International David Popper Cello Competition. After completing her studies at the Moscow Conservatory, Basinia moved to the United States to further her education. She enrolled at the Juilliard School in New York City, where she studied under the tutelage of renowned cellist Yo-Yo Ma. Basinia's time at Juilliard was a formative period in her career, and she credits Yo-Yo Ma with helping her to develop her unique style and approach to the cello. Basinia's career as a professional musician began in earnest after she graduated from Juilliard. She quickly established herself as one of the most talented and sought-after cellists in the world, performing with some of the most prestigious orchestras and conductors. Some of her most notable performances include playing the solo cello part in Shostakovich's Cello Concerto No. 1 with the New York Philharmonic and performing the Brahms Double Concerto with violinist Itzhak Perlman. In addition to her work as a soloist, Basinia is also an accomplished chamber musician. She has performed with some of the most renowned chamber ensembles in the world, including the Emerson String Quartet and the Guarneri Quartet. Basinia is known for her ability to collaborate with other musicians and bring out the best in their performances. Throughout her career, Basinia has received numerous awards and honors for her contributions to classical music. She has been awarded the Avery Fisher Career Grant, the Borletti-Buitoni Trust Fellowship, and the Leonard Bernstein Award. In 2018, she was named a MacArthur Fellow, one of the most prestigious awards in the United States. Despite her many achievements, Basinia remains humble and dedicated to her craft. She continues to perform and record music, always striving to improve and push the boundaries of what is possible on the cello.
