Bells on Temple Square is a world-renowned handbell choir based in Salt Lake City, Utah. The group was formed in 2005 as an extension of the Mormon Tabernacle Choir, and has since become a beloved fixture in the classical music world. The group's origins can be traced back to the early 20th century, when the Mormon Tabernacle Choir began incorporating handbells into their performances. However, it wasn't until the early 2000s that the idea for a dedicated handbell choir was proposed. In 2005, the Bells on Temple Square were officially formed, with 32 members selected from the Mormon Tabernacle Choir. Under the direction of conductor LeAnna Willmore, the group quickly gained a reputation for their precision and musicality. Their repertoire includes a wide range of classical and contemporary pieces, from Bach to the Beatles. They have also commissioned several new works specifically for handbells, including pieces by composers such as Michael Glasgow and Kevin McChesney. One of the group's most notable performances was their appearance at the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing, China. They were invited to perform at the Cultural Olympiad, a series of events showcasing the arts and culture of various countries. The Bells on Temple Square performed a program of American and Chinese music, including a traditional Chinese folk song arranged for handbells. In addition to their international performances, the Bells on Temple Square have also been featured on several recordings and television broadcasts. They have released several albums, including "Ring Christmas Bells" and "The Spirit of the Season." They have also been featured on the Mormon Tabernacle Choir's weekly radio and television broadcasts, "Music and the Spoken Word." The group has received numerous awards and accolades over the years. In 2010, they were awarded the prestigious American Prize in Handbell Performance. They have also been recognized by the Handbell Musicians of America, winning several awards at their national competitions. Despite their success, the Bells on Temple Square remain committed to their mission of sharing the joy of handbell music with audiences around the world. They continue to perform regularly at the Tabernacle on Temple Square in Salt Lake City, as well as at other venues throughout the United States and abroad.
