Zane van Auken was born on May 12, 1978, in New York City. He grew up in a family of musicians, with his mother being a pianist and his father a cellist. From a young age, Zane showed a natural talent for music and began playing the piano at the age of four. He later learned to play the cello and the violin. Zane attended the Juilliard School in New York City, where he studied composition under the tutelage of renowned composer John Corigliano. During his time at Juilliard, Zane composed several works that received critical acclaim, including his Symphony No. 1, which was premiered by the Juilliard Orchestra in 2001. After graduating from Juilliard, Zane moved to Europe to further his studies. He spent several years in Vienna, Austria, where he studied with composer Wolfgang Rihm at the University of Music and Performing Arts. During his time in Vienna, Zane composed several works that were performed by local orchestras and ensembles. In 2005, Zane returned to the United States and settled in Los Angeles, California. He quickly became involved in the city's vibrant music scene and began collaborating with local musicians and composers. In 2007, he founded the Los Angeles New Music Ensemble, a group dedicated to performing contemporary classical music. Zane's music is characterized by its complexity and emotional depth. He draws inspiration from a wide range of sources, including literature, art, and nature. His works often feature intricate harmonies and rhythms, as well as unconventional instrumentation. One of Zane's most notable works is his Symphony No. 2, which was premiered by the Los Angeles Philharmonic in 2010. The symphony is a sprawling, multi-movement work that explores themes of love, loss, and redemption. It features a large orchestra, as well as a choir and soloists. Another highlight of Zane's career is his opera, The Tempest, which was premiered by the San Francisco Opera in 2014. The opera is based on the play by William Shakespeare and features a libretto by Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Tony Kushner. The Tempest received rave reviews for its innovative staging and powerful music. In addition to his work as a composer, Zane is also a respected educator. He has taught composition at several universities, including the University of Southern California and the California Institute of the Arts.
